I'm wondering why the guy didn't tell them that they would have to talk to the owner of the airplane - just playing along and not giving away his suspicions - and set up an appointment for them to meet.

After they were gone, he could call the police/FBI and allow them to replace the owner and meet with the men.

People are too anxious to get involved, instead of seeing the bigger picture. The FBI guy would have been wired - this might have been a real breakthrough; especially since we're on orange alert for chem or bio warfare.
