It's the "Inside the Beltway" myopia that causes them to magnify issues important to them but that are way off-center to everyone else.

They painted themselves into a corner. Now they lose no matter what they do. They can lose a judicial appointment to conservatives or they can lose a chunk of Hispanic vote. They have chosen to sacrifice the Hispanic vote (while hoping that the erosion won't be too bad).

The really funny part is that Estrada will get in anyway, and the smart thing for them would have been to just acknowledge this and let the Senate vote proceed. So I guess the answer to your question is, "yes, they are that dumb."
