The over-riding issue is race. The Democrats are seeing their plantation slaves escaping. It is literally a question of their long-term survival as a major party. If they lose their stranglehold on racial minorities, they are through. They cannot allow the Republicans become the party of minority empowerment.

Kind of like the Democrats of the 1850s, isn't it? Maybe they'll try to pass a Fugitive Minority Act like they did back in 1850 so they can have bounty hunters drag the runaways back in chains. ;~((
