The Senate RATS don't care of they lose the Hispanics, as Rush said so correctly. All they care about is having liberal judges in the courts, nothing else! They certainly don't want a conservative in the court that oversees DC and that's where Estrada would be.

I'm starting to worry now, though...that the Dims "protesteth too much." Maybe if they lose it'll actually be a win for them somehow? Thoughts, anyone?

This WILL be a winning issue for the Democrats. Their constituency will believe that there must be something in Miguel's closet. Otherwise, the Democrat's would not be going to the mat on this won. They are winning points for "standing on principle" by not approving the nomination of this right wing extremist in sheep's clothing.

Ronald Reagan was considerably to the right of Buchanan and he did just fine without any ridiculous outreach efforts. As I understand it, Reagan did better than Bush among blacks and Hispanics (probably because at the time, Cubans and long time Texas Hispanics were the major groups).

What I object to is pandering: the candidate speaking in Spanish, Pataki promising all sorts of goodies (running to the left), amnesty for illegals, bilingual ed, etc., etc.

I think it could be too. Bush jr didn't gain many black votes because of Clarence Thomas being nominated ---although I'm glad he is in the Supreme Court. They should just pick the best person for the job, race shouldn't be a factor, and that would get Conservative votes.

Many of the houses are built with illegal labor; 90% of the maids I see working in the MANY hotels we go to are obviously illegals; most of the restaurant help; most of the gardeners. I think it would be pretty funny to watch people try NOT to patronize businesses that are using illegal labor. For example, how about Bally's gyms? Yep. Most of your vegetables and fruits involve illegal labor.

Well it ain't that way around here and we don't have illegals flooding in and we manage to survive with white and black kids doing that work. There are tons of white kids here cutting lawns during the summer etc etc My nephews were some of them

How are they surviving on $3 an hour? Hell, I don't know. I saw some sleeping in cardboard boxes. I know they are picked up at street corners, and the day's roster is read out, and they take 10 of them in a pickup.

Explain to me this: if white "youts" are so anxious for these great jobs, why do you have "help wanted" ads at EVERY fast food restaurant---some paying $10 per hour? I know in our suburb of Dayton, they bus in innercity black kids to do these jobs. But there are still help wanted posters up, permanently.

I think Reagan actually had a majority of the Hispanic vote ---not the mere 25-30% being bragged about today for Republicans. He also did have a much higher percent of the Black vote and he got it without pandering at all.

Well, that may be entirely correct. Somehow, though, I think we have to control it on THIS side of the border with the Hispanics who have the contacts to THAT side. If the attitude, is "come on in, it's your right," we all lose.

If the attitude is, "We will do what we can to get you here legally, but you have to work. There is no free lunch, and we aren't going to help you just cause you're brown," then we are in good shape.

What really galls me when I hear this "Garbage" is the people that espouse such views have no clue what Americans will or will not do. Never mind that they came to our country "Illegally", never mind that they have overburdened most if not all hospitals near the southeastern US, never mind that the small amount of taxes they pay (if they even pay)does not even put a dent in what it takes to care for them.

When was the last tim you heard of an "anglo" lettuce picker?

I kind of disagree with Rush on that part. I think they DO care, but that they are gambling that like the blacks, they can screw the Hispanics now, and get them back later.

I think with both groups, they are wrong. I think 9/11 changed some of that. This is going to change some more. Bush is going to change still more.

In this region only one out of three jobs pays $10 or more an hour ---and we have very high immigration. One out of three jobs pays just minimum wage ---the legal jobs that is. Wages here have dropped considerably --- not too long the average wage was over $8 an hour but we're actually seeing average pay dropping. It's the economy that will win elections.

I do not call it "pandering" to speak in Spanish. Kennedy won all sorts of praise for saying "I am a Berliner" in German (actually, he said "I am a doughnut," but they knew what he meant!)

Yes, Reagan did win more. So did Bush I. You know why? Because Prop 187 (which I supported) was turned into an issue about RACE rather than immigration, and because too many of the people you read on FR who are closet racists were all too happy to jump on 187 for the wrong reasons. Most Freepers are totally unbiased and great Americans, but I think on any race thread you have to be blind not to see racism stick its ugly head up. At any rate, the Hispanic vote for the GOP plummeted after 187.

I can agree with all that ---and also I can understand the frustration of certain illegals who really only want to work ---because of family reunification policies, the quotas from some countries are filled by relatives ---working or very often non-working who can easily be brought in but then those who don't have families have no way to come legally even if they can find work easily. I'd like to see total reform of the system so the nonworking can't come and the working, otherwise-law abiding at least have a better chance. We're also being overwhelmed by the elderly immigrants being "sponsored" by family members who then get them on SSI and Medicaid. They're legals but will never work.
