MSNBC SIGNS CONSERVATIVE TALK RADIO PHENOMENON MICHAEL SAVAGE TO HOST ‘THE SAVAGE NATION’...

SECAUCUS, N.J. -- February 12, 2003 -- Conservative talk radio phenomenon and best-selling author Michael Savage has been signed by MSNBC to host “The Savage Nation,” a one-hour weekly issue-oriented opinion show set to air live on Saturday afternoons at 5:00 pm (ET). The announcement was made today by Erik Sorenson, president, MSNBC.

The format of “The Savage Nation” will be based on Savage’s number one rated afternoon drive time radio program, which is heard on over 300 stations, including New York’s WABC and San Francisco’s KSFO. The new show, which premieres on MSNBC in March, will originate from San Francisco. It will feature penetrating and provocative commentary and opinion from Savage, mirroring his #1 New York Times best selling book “The Savage Nation.”

“Michael Savage is brash, passionate and smart,” said Sorenson. “His conservative point of view adds to the kaleidoscope of perspectives already heard on MSNBC - a place where a range of voices have their say, without any one dominating the channel itself. ‘The Savage Nation’ will anchor our Saturday afternoon program schedule and become destination television for those looking for compelling opinion and analysis with an edge.”

“I look forward to continuing on television what has made me so successful on radio,” said Savage. “People love my show because of my hard hitting style combined with intelligence and wit. Those who listen to me say they hear a bit of Plato, Henry Miller, Jack Kerouac, Moses, Jesus, and Frankenstein. I’m looking forward to reaching new viewers while giving my existing audience more of what they have come to love and expect, including a look into my very private studio.”

An independent-minded individualist, Michael Savage fits no stereotype. He attacks big government and liberal media bias, but champions the environment and animal rights. Trained as a scientist, he holds Master's degrees in medical botany and medical anthropology and earned his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley in Epidemiology and Nutrition Science. Along with the best selling book “The Savage Nation” and CD “Best of The Savage Nation,” he is also the author of the book “Herbs That Heal” and 17 other books. His radio show airs nationally on the Talk Radio Network and attracts one of the most loyal listening audiences in radio.

He reminds me of Bob Grant in New York with a good case of road rage at liberals.

Bob Grant is my all-time favorite conservative talk show host. He's my mentor. He's the one who made me see the light. He's the one who made who I am. He's the King of Talk Radio.

Hope he'll soon get inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame. Take that, reveeeerend jerkson!

What!??? Saturdays at 5:00PM? That's like giving someone a show at 1:00AM EST. If they really wanted this guy to be heard, they'de put him on nightly at 7 or 8.

That was my first reaction.... Who knows - maybe they are just testing this out. It will be interesting to see what kind of viewership they get. If he does well at that time slot, they might consider putting him in one of the more desired time slots. They want more viewership and they can't deny the fact of Savage's meteoric rise in popularity.

A 5 PM slot on Saturday is terrible, but it's a start. MSNBC, in recent days, has become more intelligent. They axed Donahue's show to either day-time or cancelled it entirely. The demoted Chris Matthews to 7 PM and pytting Joe Scarborough's show at 10 PM on weekdays.

I've listened to Savage, and I'm concerned about how abrasive he can be. Not that it isn't sometimes justifed. However, I am concerned the ultra left media will use Savage to PROVE their point that the RIGHT is SHRILL.

I'm wondering if this plan has an ulterior motive.

I've become cynical ... I knew it would happen.

And he's one of the best critics of the liberal media. Because he does it with humor.

I can't believe he's going to boost NBC's liberal lineup. It's a violation of what he says he believes.

What do you mean? He's never said his goal is for MSNBC to shut down... His goal is to promote his world view, which he is doing.

A show at 5 PM on Saturday. Can you say "Time Slot Of Death"?

It will probably result in the highest ratings ever on MSNBC for that time slot.

Joe Pyne -- yeah, I first saw him on a ward TV at Walter Reed in 1966 when I came back from Vietnam. He was on Sunday nights and the first show I saw was funny. The second was a little tedious, and by the third, I was wishing I was in a tiger cage in deepest Tay Ninh province. I was confined to the "dirty ward" so there was no walking out on his rants on UFOs, JFK killers, etc. Ol' Joe was the original tin-foil hat and was far more analogous to a black&white Jerry Springer than the likes of Rush or Savage.

That's because they don't want him to be heard in any main time slot. However, I'm sure they are expecting some added advertising revenue from conservatives that hour!

It will be interesting to see how he translates to TV.

I agree. I cant take him for more than ten minutes at a time. He could be the downfall of the American Conservative movement. Could drive off everyone to the left of Attila the Hun.

Bob Grant does the best interviews I have ever heard. He's gotten cranky and very hard of hearing but his show still beats Hannity for intelligent conversation.

After the viewership increases, MSNBC will move it to primetime and put it up against one of FOX's big hitters. I will not put myself in a position to give viewership to MSNBC versus FOXNEWS.

I doubt it. Savage has said he will not do TV other than on weekends. It's too much work.

"He has never been as nasty as Savage."

Unfortunately he never talks of substative issues that will determine the future of our country, issues like immigration.

I'm not sure what label I'd apply to him ...except "jerk".

How about "loud mouth shrieking jerk." He is what Clinton suggested the American conservative moment was like after the Oklahoma City bombing. Far out nutcase.

"God Bless him, and I hope you're right, but Keyes was pretty darn sure of his convictions too, wasn't wishy washy, and he still suffered in the ratings."

Oops! Sorry! Yes, except for Keys, of course.

Or put Mancow in the 9PM slot if Drudge won't come back.

Drudge would sell his right eye to come back. It's not up to him.

He called into......(I can't remember now).......and was talking to the host about not being on FOX anymore. He said he would love to come back. I was embarrassed for him. He was groveling. I like Drudge but he did something to REALLY irk Roger Ailes.

He is not afraid to say what we all think.

Fact that you are a neaderthal doesnt give you the right to drag the rest of us through the mud with your nuckles. How dare you say that we all think that way. What a load.
