Canadian Court Agrees That Bible is Hate Literature

Saskatchewan, Feb 11, 03 (LSN.ca/CWNews.com) - In a ruling given virtually no media coverage, the Court of Queen's Bench in Saskatchewan, ruled that a man who placed references to Bible verses on homosexuality into a newspaper ad was guilty of inciting hatred. The December 11, 2002 decision was in response to an appeal of a 2001 Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission (HRC) ruling which ordered both the Saskatoon StarPhoenix newspaper and Hugh Owens of Regina to pay CAN$1,500 to three homosexual activists for publishing an ad in the Saskatoon newspaper quoting Bible verses regarding homosexuality.

The purpose of the ad was to indicate that the Bible says no to homosexual behavior. The advertisement displayed references to four Bible passages: Romans 1, Leviticus 18:22, Leviticus 20:13, and 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, on the left side. An equal sign (=) was situated in the middle, with a symbol on the right side. The symbol was comprised of two males holding hands with the universal symbol of a red circle with a diagonal bar superimposed over top.

Justice J. Barclay rejected the appeal ruling: "In my view, the Board was correct in concluding that the advertisement can objectively be seen as exposing homosexuals to hatred or ridicule. When the use of the circle and slash is combined with the passages of the Bible, it exposes homosexuals to detestation, vilification and disgrace. In other words, the Biblical passage which suggests that if a man lies with a man they must be put to death exposes homosexuals to hatred."

Janet Epp Buckingham, Legal Counsel for the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada, told LifeSite: "The ruling that a verse from the Bible can be considered to expose homosexuals to hatred shows the danger for Scripture if Bill C-250 passes." Bill C-250, proposed by homosexual activist MP Svend Robinson, would see "sexual orientation" added to hate crime law as a prohibited ground of discrimination.

Do Canadians have the right to circulate a recall petition for these judges ?

Don't know about Saskatchewan but if they're appointed judges, sure why not . Petitions are admitted everyday to the House of Commons in Ottawa , and I don't know why Regina would be any different, even if it is an NDP government.

I'm not a lawyer but to me the verses on they're own are not the problem, it's the way they were manipulated with graphics and used to make a statement that the law says is hateful that is.

Canadians have neither free speech, nor freedom of religion, as this ruling shows. Canada has a liberal facist government.

At last the man of sin reveals himself...

Well, this ruling clearly violates free speech, and it clearly violates the free practice of religion. When politically correct liberal facists take away your freedoms (if indeed you ever had them), you have a liberal facist government. Don't worry, you're fine - as long as you tow the liberal facist line.

Indeed. The Canadians don't even realize how much freedom they don't have.

Apparently, the Canadians are competing with the French on being the laughingstock of the world.

They are both meek nations.

Just to be precise - the Human Rights Commission did not find the Bible to be hate speech, just Owens' use of it in his advertisement.

I'm glad I live in a country with freedom of speech and freedom of religion. In your country, a man may not publicly quote the Bible. Whoa! You live in a liberal humanist theocracy.

Gee! Think they have the balls to do the same with the Koran? That would be a good test! Someone should run verses from the Koran in an Ad regarding Homosexuality. And then someone else should sue based on that.

A provincial superior court justice, being appointed by the federal government, cannot be removed from office except by an address to the House of Commons and Senate.

Although removal proceedings have been commenced on four separate occasions, all of those judges resigned before Parliament ever considered the issue.

If you want to complain about this judge's conduct, you can write to the body which investigates complaints into misconduct of federally-appointed judges:

Canadian Judicial Council
Suite 450, 112 Kent Street
Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0W8
fax (613) 998-8889
More information is available at theCanadian Judicial Council wesbite.

You'll probably be told to go pound sand because the issue here is the decision, and not the conduct, of the judge in question.

At this point, Mr. Owens' only meaningful option is to take his case to the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal.

The meekly Canadians will soon have to seek counsel from the GOVERNMENT to know which Bible verses may be quoted in public and which may not. Their government has become their God.

Like I said in post #11 check out your own hate laws. Some of your states have one, "sexual orientation" we don't even have yet. Pick a state and print the same page and see what happens. Change it from Bible verse to Koran verse and see what happens. Dare you..:)

These laws apply to pushishment for different crimes. I have to right in these free United States to say whatever I want, and to quote anything from the Bible (or anything else) that I want. You do not.

Huh, I don't know quite as much about Canadian law as some, but it sounds alot like a violation of Freedom of speech. If the Canadians even have such a freedom.

Thanks for clarifying this. Not all states allow recall petitions. Usually these efforts flame out or the target is defeated in re-election (some state judges do face the electorate) before there is a recall election.

I was asked a question, and would think except by an address to the House of Commons and Senate. would be in the form of a petition.

It is time for a change. Revolution should be as simple as electing people who will stand up for freedom and who will impeach judicial members who will not.

There is nothing wrong with the election process. There is something wrong with the hearts and minds of the electorate. That is where the revolution must occur.
