Member of West Virginia state house of delegates, 1947-50; member of West Virginia state senate 9th District, 1951-52; U.S. Representative from West Virginia 6th District, 1953-59; U.S. Senator from West Virginia, 1959-; delegate to Democratic National Convention from West Virginia, 1960, 2000. Baptist. Member, Farm Bureau; Freemasons; Eagles; Elks; Knights of Pythias; Lions; Moose; Odd Fellows; Tau Kappa Epsilon. Former member, Ku Klux Klan. Still living as of 2002.
