Please tell me what the problem is with having a 72 hour kit in case you have to evacuate, and some food and water on hand in case of emergencies. What terrorists do not provide, Mother Nature regularly does. There is no place in this entire country that isn't prone to disaster. How far are YOU from interstates and railways upon which hazardous materials are transported? We don't need terrorists to have tank cars derail now and then.
It's fine to mock the prepared, I suppose, but history supports my view that eventually something bad will happen a lot better than it supports your position that it's stupid to practice some basic preparedness.
Surviving calamity is something the human race has done extremely well since Adam turned to Eve and said, "Well, what now?" Many catastrophes can be anticipated and prepared for. We're the wealthiest society ever and we buy far more toys than practical stuff. Not much is more practical than duct tape. So go get some! If you don't seal your house up with it, you can always use it on a wart.

(We should have had newer, safer, better, more efficient ships by now, damn it.)

i have nothing against basic prepardness but the use of duct tape and plastic sheets against chemical and biological is a bit too far out...
