I hesitate to suggest it because some people interpret it as macho BS or wild paranoia, but I'd strongly recommend getting firearms training and having something in the way of personal protection in the mix, even if it's only pepper spray (and I wouldn't recommend limiting it to that - you can't kill game with pepper spray). I started this last week, by taking a firearms class. Now, the question is, do I go with the semi auto, or can I keep my .38 revolver?

More is better when it comes to firearms, I always say. The revolver is an excellent bet unless you want to practice a lot (I do!) - in your position I'd consider a shotgun next, frankly - you can hunt more stuff with it than anything else and there's nothing like it if someone is trying to kick your door down.
But I'd also agree with the point of view that the current situation is no more dangerous than every day is. Plan and be cautious, but don't let it run your life.

Now, the question is, do I go with the semi auto, or can I keep my .38 revolver? Is it a .38, or a .357? What's the model? What's the frame made of? What's the barrel length?
One of the best self protection loads is the "FBI load," which I believe is a +P 125gr HP.
