I passed a tug pushing a grain barge on the Snake R. one day and he almost sucked me alongside, with that big prop. I was in a 16' daysailer, passed about 25 yards off his side, and ended up right in the center of his wake.

No way would I want to get close to one with an inflatable.

Unless it is on the verge of spoiling, Sturgeon Roe really has no odor.

Fortunately, my brother always shared with me and gave me a pound or two (he could have sold it for $50-60 per ounce) of the stuff after it had been processed (a complicated process).

I've introduced this delicacy to many people who swore they would never eat "fish eggs". After a bite followed by a shot of vodka straight from the freezer, they couldn't get enough of the stuff!

As I understand it,some of the caviar fishermen overseas will now catch the sturgeon, cut her open to get the eggs, stitch her back up to heal and release her to help keep up production.

The cavier brought to mind a Russian scheme that was uncovered a few years ago.

Don't remember the specifics. In brief:

A group of Russians were purchasing Paddlefish eggs from Montana at ridiculously low prices, repacking the stuff in Russia as "Russian Cavier" then shipping it back to America for sale at enourmous profit.

Somehow suspicions were raised and the USDA did a DNA print of the eggs, revealing that they were from Montana, not Russia.

That sure doesn't shock me.There's a lot of money to be made with animals and their products by the unscrupulous.

For most, honest;commercial, professional or specially licensed fishermen, trappers and hunters it's really a pretty rough way to make a living and they earn every dollar they make.

I've seen some nice folk that just couldn't resist the illegal trade but they all seem to get caught in the long run and I don't think I could handle being put in a cage for breaking the law, personally.

MSNBC Reporting now that it was a guy in a Zodiac, and they missed him.... can't find him.

He must've escaped down a alley or by making lots of turns in a residential neighborhood.
