Yes, I remember reading about the cargo concerns in Gertz's book. Gertz alone is the only real anti-China voice out there. I think the Bush administration recognizes the threat, but doesn't know how to adequately deal with it.

CHina didn't use our trade dollars to become a nuclear power--they stole our nuke secrets them or illegally obtained them. While it is true the government gets the bulk of the profit of American companies, what made China the threat that it is was the appeasement of our government.

Anyway, I think there should be economic sanctions on China--it is still a brutal dicatorship that has designs on world domination. I don't know how we thought otherwise.

"Yet under the “engagement” policy of President Clinton and his advisers, the China threat has been wished away with meaningless platitudes and unrealistic expectations that China will somehow evolve peacefully into a benign democracy. It is a policy of weakness and passivity that ill serves America’s national interests."

Bush and his people argue the same as Clinton, China will one day be so peace loving that they will not want war. Only a fool would think that.

If China doesn't get religion quick with regard to treating it's neighbors with respect, including Taiwan, and quit this foolish military buildup, I'd recommend we pull the trade plug. If we did China's financial house-of-cards would crumble. That would be the end of their military buildup. In fact they wouldn't be able to service what they have.

As for proliferation, it would probably continue, but at least China wouldn't be able to finance a global reach with it's Navy etc.

You both are right that China is not a nation we should ever have increased our trade with.
