I think the Navy uses the term "unexcused leave" Being in the Army, I prefer AWOL myself. Sounds more serious.

Unexcused leave? We used call it being AWOL, 29 days later it is called desertion. It's only AWOL/desertion if they forget to carry their Clinton-era "Timeout" cards.
