Here is the sad truth. If I were gay, a transvestite, or a full blown unwashed Marxist, I would be embraced; as a straight man, I have to watch every step, never venturing in to conversations about politics or commonsense.

You have my sympathy. I live and work in a Marxist California county--in social services, no less. I keep a pretty low profile. Do work, futilely, for the Republican Party, but in the work environment am careful. They're not though. Many folks I come in contact with have insulting anti-Bush cartoons and things in their offices--grrrr!
