I find it hard to believe that one would go through the rigours and expense of medical school simply as a means to an end for abusing kids. Don't forget - he obtained healthy fees during his practice, you can be sure. Doctors in the US are not known for poverty. So he combined his "interest" with an income.

Yes, but it's still quite a bit of investment prior to getting into the position of making money and having access to children. I'm inclined to believe that many cases are of pediatricians 'discovering' something as a result of their work rather than them getting into the work because of their interest in molesting children -- at least moreso than with other professions that child abusers seek out. Of course, I can't claim lots of personal experience, especially since I don't know how early into the medical education a person would need to decide to go into pediatrics rather than general practice.
