Just How ‘Gay’ is The New York Times? Ask Richard Berke

Original Story Exposed 'Gay' Influence at Nation's Most Influential Newspaper

CFI Media Accountability Project

Editor-in-chief's note: The following is the original story from the now-defunct Lambda Report that reported a comment by New York Times national correspondent Richard Berke that "literally three-quarters of the people deciding what's on the front page [of the Times] are not-so-closeted homosexuals." Berke, a homosexual, was speaking at an April 12, 2000, reception sponsored by the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association (NLGJA). The story and Berke's quotation received wide circulation in conservative circles but the original article was never posted on the Web.

LaBarbera-then publisher of Lambda Report (a conservative newsletter that monitored the "gay" movement) and currently editor of the Culture & Family Report-attended the meeting where Berke made the comment. Recently, LaBarbera received an e-mail from a third party that contained comments from an NLGJA official disparaging the story. (However, the official did not dispute Berke's "75 percent" remark.) In the interest of accuracy, here is the original article.

Just How Gay Is The New York Times?

Reprinted from the Lambda Report on Homosexuality

April-May 2000

The pro-homosexual metamorphosis at The New York Times has advanced so far that on any given day, three-quarters of the people who decide what goes on the front page are "not so closeted homosexuals," according to Richard Berke, the Times' National Political Correspondent.

Berke, a longtime member of the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association (NLFJA), made the following comments at a 10th anniversary reception for the group April 12 in Washington, D.C.:

"This is at a newspaper where not so long ago-when I started there 15 years ago-the department heads were asking for lists of the gay reporters on different sections so they could be punished in different ways. So things have really changed at the newspaper. Since I've been there there's been a dramatic shift: I remember coming and wondering if there were any gay reporters there or whatever. Now it's like, there are times when you look at the front-page meeting and ... literally three-quarters of the people deciding what's on the front page are not-so-closeted homosexuals. ... [It is] a real far cry from what it was like not so long ago."

Berke was one of the speakers at the NLGJA's "View from the Top" reception, held at the National Press Club April 12. Lambda Report reporter Peter LaBarbera attended the event, which was sponsored by America Online Inc., USA Today, The Washington Post, and CBS News. The NLGJA is currently engaged in a campaign to raise its membership to 2,000 by the end of the year.

I have no idea of why anyone that is conservative would read this rag. In fact, I have no idea of why there is no a complete boycott of it by conservatives.

I don't think it wise to deliberately ignore a powerful voice in America.

Best to keep tabs on them.

The only network Berke has the guts to appear on is PBS.

This would not be correct, since I don't watch PBS and I have seen Berke as a guest on television.

Further, the NYT is one of the most intelligent, unbiased newspapers in the nation

What do you make of their non-coverage of the Scott Ritter story?

Do you want to know what I make of it? I think it is but one example of their extreme, yes, extreme, liberal bias.

I've never seen him on Fox, CNN, MSNBC or any other cable network...but I've seen him frequently on PBS. You may be right, but I think the point is that the NYT doesn't like challenging environments for it's (hack) reporters.

The NYT is loaded with NON NEWS and still worth a look now and then: Science Tuesday, Arts and leisure, The crossword puzzle, The book reviews, The week in Review, and Neighborhood section to name a few. I prefer The Wall Street Journal myself.

Wait a second Sarah, I defended the NYT for being an excellent newspaper even though I disagree with it's politics. I read it for Arts and Leisure, Science Tuesday, The crosswords, editorials, Metro section, Real estate, but I never read section one. Don't confuse Intelligent with Intellectual. The NYT is very intellectual: they are secular, post-modern, multi-culti, morally relativistic, feminist, pro-choice, democratic, pro-gay, anti-gun,Pro-Castro, pro-UN, etc... So its definately Biased. The Wall street Journal is the most objective source OF FACT BASED news in the US IMHO.

I think the Times' opinion pieces will become increasingly irrelevant as they inevitably become more and more the tool of libspeak. They are a foundation of the ABCNNBCBS media, often being the source for the topics the liberal television uses as the basis for their stories. To them, the Times is the newspaper.

I think that the Times, much like the dominance of ABCNNBCBS, is going into eclipse. The future belongs to more conservative papers like WSJ or Washington Times who have made very substantial gains in opinion and political reporting just as Fox News has done. Even more significant is the trend toward people seeking out news sources online, ones which are more easily tailored to their interests and which are cheaper or free to access.

So, actually, the gayer the Times is, the better I like it. It just means they'll make the fatal mistake of marching off into Leftist irrelevancy all that sooner. It's already pretty obvious how disconnected they are from America in general.

ROTFLMAO! You must be kidding!

Oh boy! I have a psychology class coming up soon, and I have a real bad attitude lately.

Perhaps I shall toss a grenade into the education establishment for summer fun!

Why would homosexuals give a tight rats ass about abortion?

They may think that cloning homos and aborting heteros will skew the homo:hetero ratio in favor of the homo. Homosexuals Hope Cloning Will Undermine Nuclear Family

The "Old Grey Lady" is a Fag-Hag?

Sigh.... I see it's once again up to me to supply the obvious pun:

It's now the "Old Gey Lady."
