Depression, no doubt brought on by use of cocaine

Perhaps the cocaine was a wrongheaded attempt to self-medicate a pre-existing depression.

The truth is people take recreational drugs for one and only one reason: for the pleasure of it. No one ever takes drugs to self-medicate although that is an excuse often given because it absolves the user of responsibility. Recreational drugs do damage to brain chemistry, often resulting in depression, paranoia, and worse. This story is a real-world example of worse.

Cocaine is great for treating depression...15 minutes at a time.
