Text of the presentation to the U.N.s Security Council open meeting on the situation in Iraq, as delivered by United States Secretary of State Colin Powell:
Thank you, Mr. President.
Mr. President, Mr. Secretary General, distinguished colleagues, I would like to begin by expressing my thanks for the special effort that each of you made to be here today. This is important day for us all as we review the situation with respect to Iraq and its disarmament obligations under U.N. Security Council Resolution 1441

I wonder how many Iraqi military officials identified in today's U.N. briefing are now dead.
To: anniegetyourgun
Good question as they are very expendable I'd guess...

I seem to recall Bush is going to be giving a prime time speech pretty soon.......does anyone recall this being the case?
Did Powell say what we are going to do next.....like how long we will wait for the U.N. to act?

Powerful information. The world should be very afraid, however .....
A defining message of the speach was early on.
"Iraq has now placed itself in danger of the serious consequences called for in U.N. Resolution 1441. And this body places itself in danger of irrelevance if it allows Iraq to continue to defy its will without responding effectively and immediately.'.
Get the U.S. out of the U.N. and get the U.N. out of the U.S.
I suggest Paris would be a great city to house the U.N.

Awesome stuff !
Anyone who doubts the danger that Saddam Hussien presents to the world, is lieing to themselves and lieing to the world.
To: ImpBill
Agreed. I had hoped for two things to happen:
1. Powell would make a very strong, detailed case covering the Big Four (chem, bio, nuke, terror) in detail.
2. The Security Council would do nothing worth talking about, leading to a "League of Nations II" collapse.
I got request number 1 and then some, and with the Chinese and French resistance I saw earlier today, I may be getting wish number 2.

Why do I get the feeling that he's going to use nerve gas on our troops and we are going to see the first use of nuclear weapons in war for the 21st Century when the US retaliates against military targets.
To: Question_Assumptions
He won't have the chance. The U.S. will go for a coup de main: thousands of JDAMs hitting his command and control and weapons sites simultaneously while special ops kill Iraqi leaders, air mobile troops secure air fields and armor secures the oil fields. Thereafter, we will mop up with Saddam unable to communicate with his commanders, assuming he survives the first massive air strikes.
This will not be your father's war. If will not be the Gulf War. It will be the first 21st Century war.

The U.N. reports on Feb. 14. That report is expected to echo Powell's and Blix's recent comments. The Brits told us they need until the 1st week of March to have their forces in place. The war will begin in March -- almost certainly the first half of March. We will go for a second UN resolution only if we are assured of an overwhelming win. If the votes are not there, the inspectors will be removed after notification by the U.S. around the end of the month. Bush will announce Iraq is in material breach. A surprise attack may very well follow.

Believe it or not, you're going to look back on these days with a smile, and a bit of regret, that time flew by so fast.
My "baby" just got his driver's license today. I'll trade you for a toddler screaming fit. :-)

CSpan is repeating Powell at 8:00.EST.
Don't miss it. He was masterful, I thought.
A lot of people have been bashing Colin Powell for a long time. I think he will rank right up there with George C Marshall, another great Soldier and Statesman.
To: baseballmom
Thanks for the info on the repeat. I will make sure to watch it. I've heard that Powell did a good job presenting all the info. Let's hope that it's enough to convince the naysayers.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this. I had searched for a transcript earlier, but am at work and could not continue looking. I wanted to post the transcript here, plus I want to look carefully at the Secretary's remarks about anthrax.
