BELGRADE, Serbia-Montenegro - An ethnic Albanian who served in Serbia's state security was gunned down late Tuesday by two masked gunmen in the country's tense south, police said.

Serbia's deputy prime minister, Nebojsa Covic, called the killing of Selver Fazliu a "brutal terrorist attack" and accused former members of officially disbanded ethnic Albanian guerrillas for the slaying.

The rebels fought Serbian authorities volatile area until last year, when a peace deal was reached for the tense region, adjacent to the mostly ethnic Albanian populated province of Kosovo.

Covic, who negotiated the peace deal, said he thought the attackers targeted Fazliu because he had shown loyalty to Serbia by joining the state security.

Fazliu was shot dead while he was inside a shop in the town of Bujanovac, 280 kilometers (175 miles) south of Belgrade. Police were searching for the gunmen, Covic said.

The ethnic Albanian militants fought in an attempt to secede the southern region from Serbia and unite it with Kosovo, the province that has been under U.N. and NATO (news - web sites) control since the 1999 war between ethnic Albanian separatists and Serb-led government troops.

PRISTINA, Serbia-Montenegro, Feb 8 (AFP) - An international prosecutor in Kosovo has indicted 11 ethnic Albanians for killing a family of five in 2001, a UN official said Saturday.

The group was charged with murder, aiding and abetting the murder of the Hajraj family after their vehicle was ambushed and sprayed with bullets from Kalashnikov assault rifles near Glogovac, in central Kosovo.

"After a long investigation, an international prosecutor indicted 11 ethnic Albanians," Andrea Angeli, spokesman for the UN mission in Kosovo, told AFP.

Hamze Hajra, 50, his wife Miradie, 45, their son Xhevdet, 22, and daughters Mimoza, 14, and Adelina, nine, were all killed in the ambush. Another daughter, Pranvera, 16, survived the attack.

Hajra had worked for the Serbian police in 1998 and 1999, when Belgrade was forced to withdraw its forces from Kosovo following a 78-day NATO air campaign launched to end repression of the Serbian province's ethnic Albanian majority.

Four of those indicted are members of the province's civil emergency force, KPC, formed out of former ethnic Albanian guerrillas. Another force are members of the local police force, the KPS, Angeli said.

The trial is to start in mid-2003. If found guilty the suspects face up to 40 years in prison.

Since Kosovo came under UN and NATO control in June 1999, there have been numerous acts of violence, primarily targeting non-ethnic Albanians but also incidents between Albanians.

Serbia is neither for nor against the attack on Iraq. The country is pretty much indifferent to it, because it has no effect on Serbia either way. The middle east is a region which I doubt anyone in Serbia could care less about. The current Serbian leadership has not expressed any opposition to an attack against Iraq, the way some other countries (like France and Germany) have.

As for the arming of Iraq, those allegations have been disproven. Some anti-Serbian lobby group started the whole rumour and the US government has dismissed the allegations as false. Although there was military cooperation between Yugoslavia and Iraq during Milosevic's rule.

Not sure why you sent this to me... I'm as appalled as anyone else at acts of terrorism. No matter what the situation, terrorism is unacceptable. I condemn these acts as much as any of you... However, to try to condemn all Muslims, as some of these posts have done in the past - is just ludicrous. Target terrorists and terrorist groups, but the Albanians, and the Turks, are as pro-American as any other European country- more so than some (i.e.- France, Belgium, and Germany).

Of course the Albanians love the US now. The US gave them a huge piece of territory. But if it's decided that Kosovo should remain part of Serbia, the Albanians will become just as anti-American as the Arabs. I can guarantee that with 100% certainty.
