Computers have already all but eliminated the need for extras, especially on long shots. Hehehehehe...computers, and those of us who despise what Hollyweird has become, will have the last laugh eventually.

Even in "long shots" people are needed as extras. I know a professional film extra who provided some of the voice work for the crowd in Gladiator.

Can't be seen, can't be identifiably heard, but he got paid all the same.
