The author is trying to connect the dots that all politicians lie. This is comparable to Bill Clinton's claims to have flown from Laguardia, NY to London as a student when no such flight ever departed from there. Or his claims to have witnessed churches burning in Arkansaw as a child when it was in Mississippi. Establish that all politicians lie. demonstate your opponent telling a lie.
