Fear may be a reason, but one can't discount the competitive reason also.

Seconded. Men's lives are competition. They compete for women, for jobs, for everything they get in life. The last thing they want to come to home to, at the end of a long day, is another competitor.

After 7 years as a stay-at-home mom, and a homeschooling mom, I have started a home-based business. My husband's secretary quit working for him a year ago to do this, and is now making 6-figures. After witnessing this for himself, my husband is not being the least bit competitive, rather he is totally encouraging me to GO FOR IT and surpass his salary!!! Yes, there is something in it for him, but he sees that getting out of the house and accomplishing something, meeting other intelligent women, and making a difference in peoples lives is invigorating for me. Any man worth his weight would be supportive of his wife/girlfriend doing something that makes her happy and helps her grow personally. If they are not supportive of this, they are too selfish to marry, IMO. Marriage involves sacrifice of both parties.
