So sympathizers of Saddam and the Islamonazis in the press wrote and circulated this article to further their cause by attempting to appeal to the PETA and animal rights activists. :-o

Good God , man. Give it a rest, Please.

No, that'd be preaching to the choir.
The objective of propaganda is to undermine the support of the wishy-washy soccer moms who flip-flop back and forth in the middle of the political spectrum.

Tell ya what, Willie. I may have the Admin Moderator delete this thread and let you repost with the "correct" emphasis in all the right places so you can sway the soccer mamas back in line, Seeing as how the intent of what was stated in the article is not conveyed properly in your view.

Man, it must be tough being you these days. Propaganda and pets.. What next?

For somebody who portrays a strong image of support for our military,
you are dumb as a rock when it comes to detecting the subtle methods used by the left-wing media to undermine public support.

If you want to take the article at face value, it's fine with me.
I fully support efforts to find adoptive homes for pets that are necessarily left behind.
But I'm not going to be as naive as you regarding the agenda and manipulations of the left-wing media.

OMG. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't clicked on the source.

There are so many kill shelters still, and places filled to the brim, why can't they help them?!?

We have a Pitt Bull Terrier and love him. If Mavis is still alive, we'd house her until her owner returns. We live in Texas. We'd have to have her flown here. Please contact us one way or another.

In the News/Activism forum, on a thread titled As Marines deploy from San Diego, many are leaving pets behind, Slyfox wrote: There was an article yesterday on FR which was about the importation of animals from I think Puerto Rico, because the campaign to spay and neuter animals in the US has been so successful that the shelters are running out of dogs.

This is exactly the impact I was afraid that questionable article would have. There is *no* shortage of unwanted pets in the US and millions of unwanted dogs and cats are still being euthanized annually. The article is misleading. Read the article carefully and you will see the writer is referring to one shelter in the US receiving dogs from a shelter in Puerto Rico. Sounds like some kind of business arrangement but it is irresponsible of this reporter to go on and mislead the public into thinking we have succeeded in putting an end to the huge number of unwanted pets from *this* country that are being euthanized - as well as giving the impression that this is the case with all shelters and pounds throughout the US. Don't take my word for it. Call your local pound, rescue shelter or better yet, your vet. And then complain to USA Today about sloppy, lazy reporting that could set back the spaying and neutering programs at:

The Ultimate Mission or Goal IS to save the animals. They have no weapons to defend themselves, at least the service members do when they are deployed.

I agree and have been busy forwarding the article as well as the patriotic pets URL. Thanks for posting this and thanks for the patriotic pets URL (sorry, I can't remember who forwarded that).

Maybe it would be better to start a new thread with a link to Patriotic Pets in order to get rid of the DISRUPTERS.

AllI did was alert people to what was posted yesterday.
I have nothing else to do with either of the articles.

I have a dog that I rescued from a puppy mill situation.

Willie, Willie, Willie.. Face value ? I can take a jab in the eye, a kick in the butt, a 2 by 4 over the head, but where do you, of all people on this site, get off calling me naive and dumb as a rock re: detecting "subtle methods" used by the left-wing media to undermine public support.

Name-calling, from you? Who'da thunk?

BTW, What exactly undermines public support in the article? Have you specifics you could share to "educate" everyone, seeing as how you know so much about subtle?

Oh, and if you want to keep replying and bumping this thread, Have at it! My cats are getting a chuckle out of it.

I am not affiliated with Patriotic Pets or with the shelter that took in Mavis. Try contacting the shelter directly about Mavis, or contacting Patriotic Pets about helping another service person's animal. My guess is that the publicity about Mavis has already landed her a home.

Doesn't anybody see this story as bizarre media antiwar propaganda?

It's bizarre alright, but not only for the reason you suggest. Surely the marines are leaving behind loved ones a bit more significant that a favorite dog or cat.

And if you have the kind of job where you have to leave a pet unexpectedly or for long periods of time, you shouldn't acquire one to begin with.

" The article is misleading "

Absolutely. The only Puerto Rican dog adoption situation I had ever heard of, was dog lovers from the Southeastern part of the US,setting up spay and neuter clinics in San Juan and bringing the worst cases of neglect and abuse back to the US for treatment and adoption. The situation in the Caribbean is abysmal for homeless dogs, but some orgs are trying to help. There is absolutely no shortage of homeless pets in the US-www.petfinder.com is a great site.Plug in your zip code and it will show you, with pictures, the pets available at your local shelters. You can even search for a specific breed.

How a society treats its animals says a lot about how it treats its children and elderly.

No one knows when a call-up of forces will happen.

Would you deny service personnel even the pleasure of animal companionship?

Some don't want to leave 2-legged loved ones behind and choose to not have permanent human relationships either. Should they be denied all forms of companionship just so a thread like this doesn't offend anyone.

Man, this forum is getting goofy lately.

I'd bet that there are a lot of retired Marines and Navy in that area who'd volunteer to work the shelter at Camp Pendleton. Maybe a call to the local American Legion post or VFW would stir up some local involvement.

As for the Marine with the pit bull--let him take it with him on his upcoming deployment. It would add morale and be a "force multiplier" to an expeditionary force!!
