ICONOCLAST DAILY NOTEBOOK....

Heart of Darkness....

February 3, 2003: The so-called "war on terrorism" is really a war of civilization vs. barbarism. The war thrust upon us by Islamo-fascists is a war against science, rationality and knowledge, and in favor of theocratic ignorance.

As usual, the failure of such utopian fanatics requires a scapegoat; and that scapegoat is, not surprisingly, the Jews. The widespread reaction in the Arab world to the space shuttle disaster could not be clearer. It was cheered as divine punishment for our support of Israel and the Jews. The backward Arab world reacted with primitive superstitious glee.

This reality is very difficult for our educated elites to accept. They want to believe there are rational reasons for the hatred targeting us. They cannot believe someone might be motivated by the urge to kill us, precisely because of our proudest accomplishments and the superiority of our civilization.

Remember that, while Kurtz's last words in Heart of Darkness were "the horror," Marlow chose to hide those words from the woman who loved Kurtz, saying instead his last words were, "your name." So much easier to avoid "the horror" in favor of benign and caring motives, even if they weren't present.

Similarly, it's easier for the "caring" elite on the left to believe that the Taliban had their rational motives, rather than to think they might have deliberately destroyed great and timeless works of art out of envy and hatred. Or to believe Saddam, Bashir al Assad, Osama and friends have good reasons, rather than maniacal and murderous envy of our freedoms, motivating them to kill as many of us as possible................

The terrorists' demands are non-negotiable. Our response should also be.

This reaction from the "Muslim" world demonstrates the implacable nature of those who seek to destroy us. This is not our war against Islam. It is Islam's war against us.

Americans better all get on board and support the President as we take the battle to the enemy. I fear that it will require much destruction and much tkain gof life but we have no choice.
