Yesterday someone posted that it was possible they brought many patches on the shuttle to be handed out later. I don't know if it is true or not but it does make a lot of sense.

Every flight they take up many mementos for the family and teammates on the ground. Pins, patches, flags, etc.
We have several such items at home. All have flown on the shuttle and ISS.
