I saw those pictures earlier when I was on the phone with another engineer and we discussing the image. We both concluded it was an camera imaging error.
Notice there is no trailing of debris or fire about the entire perimeter of the object in this image. It is symmetrical. A contrail of debris and flame would have been evident otherwise.
This anomally was caused by a momentary out of focus condition of the lens, the diamond pattern is due to the crystal structure of the glass of the lens. An instant later the camera goes into focus and the image shows a single point without the lens flaring.

Hmmm...I just don't think so...Please keep a Watch on FOX...they have beenshowing this video all morning...it's right at the start...I'm NO EXPERT, and you may be right about the iris reflection etc...but when you see the video..it really does appear to be so.

I believe that you are correct. Unfortunately alot of people are going to believe what they want to see. I thought that I saw the shuttle flying sideways when I first saw the picture, then the focus got better and the image was much smaller.
