From News 8 Austin:

NASA confirms shuttle explosion during reentry for Florida landing

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER -- Space shuttle "Columbia'' is missing.

NASA declared an emergency after it lost contact with Columbia.

Columbia was scheduled to land in Florida at 9:16 a.m. Eastern time, but NASA lost contact with the shuttle as it passed over the Dallas-Forth Worth area around 9a.m., Eastern time.

Dallas TV station WFAA played video of the shuttle passing overhead. The video appeared to show "multiple trails" from the shuttle as it moved across the sky.

NASA has scrambled search and rescue teams in the Dallas region. It warns people to be on the lookout for "debris'' and says such debris could be "toxic.''

The shuttle was traveling at more than 12,000 miles an hour at an altitude of more than 200,000 miles an hour at last contact.

NASA was very concerned about security for this mission as it was carrying Israel's first astronaut.

Columbia was launched on Jan. 16 on a science mission that made headlines because of the presence of the first Israeli astronaut in space.

Security was tighter than usual because of Ilan Ramon's presence but blast off went smoothly and the mission was going well until Columbia was reported missing just minutes before it was supposed to land at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

There were six Americans on board the shuttle along with Ramon.

Columbia's crew completed all of their 80-plus experiments in orbit. They studied ant, bee and spider behavior in weightlessness as well as changes in flames and flower scents, and took measurements of atmospheric dust with a pair of Israeli cameras.

Regards, Ivan

Well, I guess it was meant for George W. Bush, the impersonator.

Like I said, saying the shuttle is some flying disaster is hysterical. It adds nothing to the truth and claims.

If you see any jpegs on any news site of those things celebrating, copy them and post them on Free Republic. Maybe a thread could be set up just for images of the things rejoicing in the deaths. I've seen references here on the Palestinian street celebrations for 09/11. Supposedly, those images were removed from their respective news sites to protect Islam's image and to prevent "hate crimes". If there are celebrations, either the images will soon be removed or they will never even be posted in the first place. So if you see them, copy them (don't just post a link to the site). The images of Muslim rejoicings over 09/11 may no longer be viewable for the average American except at FR. Let's not let them hide their true face over this tragedy , either.

If Saddam allows street parties, he's stupider than I thought. He'll probably be the first to release a message of condolence. If he has any brains, he will.

I think it is strange that the president hasn't come on and made a statement already. Isn't it? It has been almost 2 hours now.

Pure speculation, but there were doing some experiments with flame on this flight.

No on the EVA. Apparently NASA ran some diagnostics and was satisfied there was no problem.

This is far more likely to be a result of Tank Insulation damaging tiles on the wing leading edge on takeoff.

That will probably be the final judgement.. three years from now.
