I don't follow the shuttle reports, either. Last week, I watched the Columbia astronauts do their very personal zero-gravity tricks late one night on public access television-- never suspecting such a dramatic fate awaited them.
I heard Coast to Coast a couple weeks ago-- someone predicted something terrible would happen in the next week or so.
