Someone told me that cats take being stared at as a threat. Since it's an innately hostile action in nature and implies intent to fight.That is true. They look away to let you know they mean no harm. And if you are ever about to be jumped by a big cat, as hard as it would be, close your eyes. (Same goes for a hostile dog -- don't look him in the eye.)

Kinda hard NOT to stare at my 24 pound cat as she's trying to jump at me.
