Bill Would Ban Smoking In Car With Kids

Georgia Democrat Proposes Bill To State House

POSTED: 9:47 a.m. EST January 31, 2003

ATLANTA -- Smoking in a car carrying a child would be illegal under a bill proposed Thursday in the Georgia House of Representatives.

Democrat Paul Smith proposed the bill to make it a misdemeanor to smoke in a vehicle where a child is restrained in a car seat. The misdemeanor would carry a fine and include cigars, cigarettes and pipes.

"This is just protecting the kids from secondhand smoke," Smith said. "It's damaging to adults and it's even more dangerous to children."

Smith said he knew of no other state with such a law but is optimistic the Legislature will consider the smoking bill.

"We've got to start somewhere," he said.

If by village, you mean Police State, you're correct.

A logical next step would be rolling down the window of your car with a child occupant, when there is another car emitting exhaust infront of you, or driving with a child in an area that had been set on fire by the Forest Services as a "controlled burn." It's all about control and not about pollution.

This goes to show that the five most beautiful words in the English language are those that begin the First Amendment, "Congress shall pass no law...." and the scariest phrase in the English language is "I have introduced legislation."

Please - where is the common sense?

Walk up to the window, open it, place your hands firmly on the sill, and look out! THEN you may find some common sense! :)

It all depends on which you think is more important, "health" or freedom. Obviously, you have made your choice. Feel free not to smoke in your car. If you want to put me in jail for smoking in my car, just get out of my country. Don't bring your socialist heritage into America. PS: If one is smoking with the windows closed, the vent system will exhaust the smoke - that's one of the things it's designed to do.

It will get even better. I heard a doctor talking to a woman one day about smoking. She said she smoked outside and never around her kids - he said it did not matter as it got on your clothes and still affected them...so if they pull you over for something and you have a car seat and no kid, they will probably cite you anyway.

That line jumped out at you, too, eh? I'm not a smoker, but wow...

Bill Would Ban Smoking In City-limits With Kids

They tried this in a town in mryland a bit over a year ago. The Mayor that proposed and pushed for it claimed that seeing adults smoking was a bad influence on the children. The ordinance was overturned.

The Mayor was later arrested for fondling a boy in the men's room of the Washington Cathedral.

Yet he claimed smokers are a bad influence on children, SHEESH.

I don't care if you smoke in your car...I don't think you should smoke in you car with kids in it; kids that have no say in the matter...I thought that was what we were talking about, no?

>>It all depends on which you think is more important, "health" or freedom.

How about the freedom of kids to grow up without asthma or lung cancer from negligent parents?

I see it all the time, and it is disgusting that someone should subject children to so much pollution at such a young age.

The air in L.A. yesterday was a lovely beige shade. If you live here, you are subjected to bad air all the time. No one here is whining. Well, at least no one with a brain.

And what is next, banning smoking in the home?
