American law is based on the knowledge that people are fallen from grace, but that new grace has been offered us by Christ. Consequently, they were both pragmatic about the need to constrain the twisted behavior of man and optimistic about a culture that could develop of free citizens being the ones who form their own, very necessary government, including government's just constraints.
I highly recommend the founding fathers quotes posted just a bit earlier in this thread.
