The bulk of those cases resolved themselves in matters of hours or days. They were runaways, children taken by parents in custody disputes or adults fleeing personal or financial problems.

The Police Department has 10 open missing person cases from last year, including eight involving people who left goodbye notes or have histories of running away.

The remaining two unsolved cases are Laci Peterson and Rebekah Rachel Miller.

Peterson, 27, was reported missing on Christmas Eve. Despite national media attention and an extensive search for the pregnant substitute teacher, police have not been able to determine what happened to her.

Miller, a 33-year-old homeless woman, last was seen on Oct. 15 on Oakdale Road where she was looking through trash bins. Investigators said Miller's case generated very few leads and that there was no sign of a struggle where Miller's belongings later were found.

Police believe the disappearances of Peterson and Miller were the result of foul play.

Until they are found -- or until their cases are ruled homicides -- the women join a long list of unsolved missing person cases that has plagued investigators in the Northern San Joaquin Valley and foothills since 1972:
