Our supposed "unilateralism" is a result, not of ambition on our part, but the cause-and-effect consequence of our friends having abandoned the field. They are sinking into a kind of cultural pessimism, one which afflicts us as well, but which we resist while they have given over to it.

At a moment in history in which steady, adult heads and hands are required, they are sadly in short supply. Europe is navel gazing, while Canada is looking for a navel to gaze at.

We prepare to act alone, not out of arrogance, but out of the sad recognition that we are largely alone in this. Our enemies are the enemies of Western Civilization, but we are the target of choice, because we are the only ones with the will to resist, and so we are the only ones that need be defeated. The others have already been defeated, without a shot being fired in their direction. It may seem difficult to believe, if you don't believe in a real, living God, but having shed their faith in God Europe no longer has the ability to distinguish between liberty and fascism, between right and wrong, between survival and extinction.

If you have any love for what Europe once meant, or at least what Europe could have meant, it is enough to bring a tear to your eyes.

But to realize how closely we have come to the same finish, how closely "but by the grace of God go we", is to feel a shiver at once of fear and grateful awe. We are at the edge of the darkness, and fully half the country would take us down that path, at least half the country would gladly trade our birthright for a mess of pottage. But we have been given a chance, if we will but stand firm, hold fast to our principles, and share what light we have, God will defend us and light the way back.

What you say reminds me of something:

And sometimes when I came to a crossroad
Should I stick to the left or the right
When there was more than just one way to go
Then I chose to head for the light

I found myself on the outside
And I faced the chance to get in
Now I left the moments of twilight
Prepared to win
