It was an effort to move conversation to new threads. Even with pagination, it's still useful to subdivide the evening into pre-speech, speech, and post-speech.
Before the new software which permits pagination was in place at FR, I was able to "move" 33 threads over the course of 16 hours, with well over 4,000 replies, without ever having to "lock a thread"
