I was in Germany. Another American in my building came to my door because she was listening to German radio and heard the words Space Shuttle Challenger, explosion, and tot (German word for dead) all in the same sentence. Neither one of us had a TV so I turned on my radio and translated. It was weird and terrible.

Wow. So was I--I was an exchange student in Germany, and I was in bed listening to "Armed Forces Radio". My mother sent me the American newspapers from that day, since I had no access to any in my village. I remember feeling terribly alone that day, because none of my classmates really shared the tragedy that I felt as an American at the news...

I was sick and home from school. My mom and I turned on the TV to watch the Price is Right and instead the shuttle launch was on. When it exploded, I said "I don't think its supposed to do that". It took a while to realize it exploded. A similar feeling I had during 9/11.
