I am not a tax accountant or tax lawyer, so I am not really qualified to answer your technical question about filing jointly or separately. HST, when I was still married, I took the trouble to "test" file each way, and chose the method which resulted in a lower tax bill. You probably need to consult an accountant.
With respect to the double taxation of SS: The answer is yes, we will have to abolish the income tax to eliminate that special fedgov "revenue enhancement." It was passed on the now standard Democrat LIEberal/Socialist/Marxist class warfare, greed and envy (bogus) arguments.
