No, just campassionate enough to realize that at a certain point, hope can be more cruel than the truth.
I don't think there's many people who hold out real hope for Laci's safe return. But absent conclusive evidence of her demise, I don't think the authorities can make any other kind of statement.

And it will depend on the evidence report that's supposed to come out at the end of the week. If there's evidence of large amounts of blood, or any other tissue etc. that was found, then they'll be able to declare that something awful happened to her.
