This jerk didn't even have a Democrat challenger in 2002, he got about 85% against a libertarian. He won the GOP primary for district 94 by 61-39 over Edward Powell.

This is bizarre: he said he should be elected in 2002 because of his party and principles!!!!!!

And here's another good one, Decker criticizing Jim Black's heavy-handed control of the legislature:

http://www.news-record.com/news/government/ga/ncbudget14rk.htm

"But when Democrats and a few Republicans voted to cut off a second day of floor debate after six hours, some GOP lawmakers were incensed that they were unable to have their amendments heard.

Others complained that Democratic leaders had broken their promise to let the deliberations run into the night.

"In a democracy, the minority rights are protected and honored," said Rep. Michael Decker, R-Forsyth. "But it seems that our minority rights in this body today were not."

A lot of the former Democrats in the South who switched to the Republican party were never as conservative as the GOP base. The late John Bowden Connally was believed to have regretted his 1973 defection to the Republicans. It broke Lady Bird Johnson's heart. A TX congressman whose name escapes me defected in 1995, but he lost the 1996 primary to now Rep. Ron Paul, R-TX. A Freeper in Lubbock says that Lubbock County is now heavily Republican, but most of the Republicans are former Democrat moderates who have hijacked the party there from the conservative base. In LA, Republicans frequently cross party lines to support such Democrats as John Breaux and Mary Landrieu. So some of these defections may not have been as useful in the long run as they seemed at the time of the party switch. Former Democrat Jesse Helms, however, remained true to conservatism after his defection in 1970.
