NJ Man Wins Annual Wing Eating Contest

PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ Cheered by thong-wearing ``Wingettes'' and about 20,000 spectators, two dozen beefy, costume-wearing competitors gobbled and slurped up plates of chicken wings in sports talk radio station WIP's 11th ``Wing Bowl.''

Perennial winner Bill ``El Wingador'' Simmons, 41, of National Park, N.J., outgorged other favorites including Larry ``Buzzsaw'' Shaitelman, 32, Chris ``Beefeater'' Coyne, 33, and Doug ``Damaging Doug'' Canavin, 31, in the annual competition to see who can keep down the most wings. Simmons ate 154 wings for the victory at the Spectrum.

The event began in 1993 when the station conceived the idea of a chicken-wing eating contest on the Friday before the Super Bowl in honor of the Buffalo Bills, who had been to the Super Bowl several times without ever winning.

Don Lerman, the butter guy was a contestant for this year's Wing Bowl.

I wonder if the donut guy Booker is really Coondog O'Karma.

Coondog is a white guy if memory serves me right. Eric "Badlands" Booker is a very large black man.

I personally don't know. It was said by Angelo Cataldi that Coondog held some kind of donut record. I eat three donuts and I'm full for a week

El Wingador was supposed to be ranked 15th in the world.

Nothing will ever beat the 50+ hot dogs that Japanese fellow gobbled down in 12 minutes.

Japanese champion Takeru Kobayashi retained his title in Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest, downing 50-and-a-half hot dogs in 12 minutes.

ESPN compares him to Tiger Woods!

"I myself compared him to Tiger Woods last year," said Rich Shea, president of the International Federation of Competitive Eating (IFOCE), which sanctions 50 events each year. "I've often heard people say he's the Michael Jordan of eating. But I think to associate Michael Jordan with Kobayashi is a slight against Kobayashi ... if you look at the margins with which this guy wins."

In the first three minutes of this year's competition, Kobayashi ate 18 hot dogs. A minute and half later, he was beating Booker by 18. A little more than five minutes in, he beat Booker's U.S. record of 28, freshly established a month ago. He then proceeded to eat 3.3 hot dogs a minute for the final six minutes, a pace that no competitor could keep up with after the first three minutes of eating.

John Corby of WTVN 610 in Columbus interviewed this guy several months ago. What cracked me up was his method of "training". A few months before the event, he starts his training by freezing a bunch of tootsie rolls (the big ones) and chews on them to strengthen his jaw muscles. Now that's dedication to a cause.

The Food Network ran a 1/2 hour special on him, as well. He trains in Japan by consuming a 10 course meal. Check out the stats on the hotdogs.

According to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, the average American eats 70 hot dogs a year. Takeru Kobayashi ate 50½ hot dogs in 12 minutes. The following are estimates based on average hot dog statistics.

Hot dogs: 180 calories X 50½ = 9,090 calories

Buns: 140 calories X 50½ = 7,070 calories

Total calories: 16,160 (percentage of daily allowance: 708)

Fat from hot dogs: 13 grams X 50½ = 656½ grams (percentage of daily allowance: 895)

Fat from buns: 2½ grams of fat X 50½ = 126¼ (191.3 percent)

Sodium: 450 milligrams X 50½ = 22¾ grams (percentage of daily allowance: 848)

Who judges whether a wing has been legitimately consumed or not?

Ex-major league baseball umpire, and local home-grown talent: Eric Gregg (who probably would win if he entered)

I'm reminded of a contestant who took issue with a rib eating contest because he ate "1" rib but ate the whole thing, meat and bone, while the other contestants left plenty of scraps on their plates.
