If you entered legally at a Port of Entry, then you did not encounter the Border Patrol. You would have spoken to an Inspector.
By law, you don't even need a birth certificate, if you are a US citizen. A US citizen only needs to make a verbal declaration of citizenship. On the other hand, the law also states that the burden of proof is on you.
I inspect approximately 200 people each day, I spend no more than 5 to 10 seconds with a US citizen.
