"Spokesman Russ Lopez deflected the challenge from the bishop and criticized Weigand for "telling the faithful how to practice their faith." He then predicted Weigand's comments would alienate California Catholics."

Even Protestants who never attended a single moment of catechism class know that Catholic Bishops kinda, sorta have the authority to "tell the faithful" what the rules for Catholics might be, including most particularly how to "practice their faith".

Looks like Mr. Lopez missed class the day they covered the part about the bishops' position in the church.

Duuuuhhh. It's, like, the first line in the job description. For years, now, too many of them (in the USA, at least) have been neglecting that part of their job. Now one of them starts to do it, and the babykillers start whining about it.

Hey Lopez!! Put a sock in it!!
