Is there any advantage whatsoever that the 5.56 round has over the 7.62 (apart from maybe that more can be carried and they are all used by our allies)?

None that I know of.

The excuse seemed to be that the .223 would cause more wounds [as opposed to straight up deaths] and therefore take up more of the enemy's hospital bedspace and medics as well as logistics etc. etc.

I dunno.

I heard alot of complaints coming back from Army Soldiers in Afghanistan who didnt like the stopping power of their m-4s.

The Marines didnt really complain...we just moved to taking immediate head shots.
