EXICO CITY, Jan. 21 The government of Mexico, in a direct challenge to the Bush administration, asked the International Court of Justice today to block the executions of 51 Mexicans on death row in the United States.
The court, the highest tribunal of the United Nations, sits in The Hague. It has no enforcement powers. But if it issues an injunction, the United States must choose whether to respect or defy its judgment.
The 1963 Vienna Convention, signed by the United States, Mexico and most other nations, requires governments to inform foreign prisoners of their rights to communicate with their consulates.
Mexico contends that American officials, both state and local, have ignored that treaty. It seeks a ruling ordering new trials for the condemned Mexicans, most of whom are imprisoned in California and Texas.
The case focuses attention on the widespread use of the death penalty in the United States, which, along with Japan, is the only rich industrialized nation to impose capital punishment.
Juan Manuel Gómez Robledo, lead counsel for Mexico, told the court his countrymen's rights had been systematically and repeatedly violated by American authorities. "The involvement of consular officers can mean the difference between life and death for a Mexican national facing capital charges," he told the court.
William Taft, a State Department lawyer representing the Bush administration, argued that Mexico's petition was "unsubstantiated by the facts and finds no support in the law."
The petition has drawn wide attention in Mexico, which does not impose the death penalty. No other foreign nation has more citizens on American death rows.

The petition has drawn wide attention in Mexico, which does not impose the death penalty.Summary executions of citizens by the army and petty officials don't count?
The average Mexican citizen would be safer on death in America than on the streets of his own city.

Hurry up and whack 'em before any ruling is issued. Hey, why not?
Correction: the average Mexican citizen would be safer on death row in America than on the streets of his own city.

I stopped at the local liquor store this evening to get a few beers to wind down with and after standing in line for several moments I asked the clerk what the holdup was. She replied that the guy in front (mexican) had presented an ID issued to him by Mexico and that it was all in spanish and she was not able to identify his DOB. The guy to whom the ID belonged to started getting impatient with her and rambling off a few words in spanish when I informed her that I could be of assistance. I looked at the Mexican, then at his ID and said, sorry, unless you have an ID issued by the local, state, or federal government of the United States of America, you cant purchase alcohol here. Apparently he didnt like my imput as he started ramble off again. I then suggested that perhaps since he had no ID issued by the US that she should call the police department.
End of Situation. He left rather quickly.

Yes, and we can all look forward to the Mexican government employing the indentical tactic to oppose any just punishment for the murderers in the Norfolk, NE bank robbery last September.
Welcome to globalism, folks. The outrages just go on and on and our government continues to act against the interest of ordinary Americans. I wonder if folks in this country will ever wake up and see what is going on.

Reply to post #7: No, you've got it backwards. Wait until the world court's ruling, then execute them all on the same day. That will show the commies what we think of their court.

That we are even concidering listening to the current Mexican dictator, I mean President, when he has no respect for our laws or border, shows that votes count more than what is best for our country and our citizens
