If Enrique is open to and is working toward assimilation, I have nothing but respect for him. Even if he is having problems taking your order?

American culture is the Borg. We take what is best about every culture we come in contact with and we assimilate it into our own culture to make our own culture stronger. You can buy jalapeno pierogies in the supermarket. Only in America could you get Mexican-flavored Polish food.

I'll take unity over diversity any day.

Even if he is having problems taking your order?Sure, as long as he is making the attempt to learn the language with the final goal being mastery. If not, no.

And there is no known benefit to telling people they cannot kix either.

I should ask what color you are that I may properly celebrate your diversity but I won't. I could care less. I offer instead, a hearty even if belated welcome to America. I wish that most Americans would join the culture of this country as well as you seem to have done.

"If you REALLY want to see 'diversity'... go to 'China Town' (count the Chinese there). Then go to 'Little Italy' (count the Italians there). Then go to 'Little Odessa'... etc, etc. (did I mention Harlem, Wash Heights? They are all in New York. Then write a third grade level essay on why people tend to naturally want to live with and near those like them.".
Come to Astoria where I live and you will find an amazing collection of people represeting may nations and cultures on this planet. This is not social engineering at work just the desire of many people (I lived in Manhattan for 32 years but lost the cheap apartment of 28 years) to live in a safe community with strong family values and cheaper everything than many of the surrounding communities. I'm 20 minutes from Manhattan to link up with work and old friends. The "diversity" as manifest in Astoria has led to the proliferation of lots of great little restaurants and food shops.
I know that food was not the initial intent of this thread
but I just thought I'd kick in my two pesos.

Diversity is the word Socialists use when they want you to agree with anything they want to promote.Diversity is also known as "shoving my ideas down your throat against your will"---A perfect example of this are the actions of the Jr. Senatorial Beast of New York, Hillary Rotten Clinton.

"Mommy, that girl has a bigger dolly than mine. WAAAAAAH!"
"Don't worry little Lucy I'll just take it away from her and give it to you."
" Thanks mommy."

There's nothing wrong with diversity and it produces stronger societies when it occurs naturally. Texas food is a great example. People live as they wish, as long as they respect the rights of others to do likewise, and the curiosity of others for different cultures leads to cultural exchange. OTOH, "diversity" as practiced by the government is simply an excuse for governmental control; ie giving the government the authority to tell private business what their hiring practices should be. Big difference.

last i checked, their economy wasn't so hot either The parking lots are still full of Japanese cars and Circut city is still full of Japanese gizmos. If they are having a economic downturn, it is not beacuse they lack diversity.

But the same people who promote "diversity" are aggressively against "standardized" testing because they are culturally biased.
So should I take it that testing should be culturally diverse? Perhaps a few questions posed in Urdu or Ebonics or about the Temple On The Mount or the mating habits of Eskimos?
Others on this thread have argued that focus on diversity actually serves to seperate "groups." Synonyms for diverge (the root of diversity): disagree, differ, discord, dissent, fall out, oppose, conflict, deviate, depart, clash, take issue, vary. (American Heritage Dictionary) Oops a dictionary might be defacto an anti-diversity tool I suppose.
Obviously there are many "theories" of and about "diversity," at this point I have seen only one specific benefit and that is menu choices. On the other hand - I make a pretty good Swedish Meatball (you know small and hard) and I've never been to Sweden nor met a Swede as far as I know.

Even if this experiment doesn't teach you or your friends about diversity, everyone still gets a donut or two, and isn't that just as important as learning? Good Point. In fact I heard on the news this morning that two cops back east who have recently retired after 30 years on the force, have pooled their savings to buy a donut shop. Wonder what color(s) the cops are?

Can you tell me what the intrinsic benefits of a homogeneous soceity are? If you can, perhaps you can answer your own question...1) No disrespect of other citizens due to race;
2) Similar cultural experience makes communication more efficient;
3) Fear of being shunned makes anti-social behavior less likely.
I came up with these on the spur of the moment, but I could probably think of some more after a bit of reflection.
