"If anybody should be complaining about battlefield deaths, it is poor, rural whites," says Charles Moskos, a military sociologist at Northwestern University in Illinois.

It's a little bit strange that the first line in his curriculum vitae is:

"Military Service: U.S. Army Combat Engineers, 1956-1958 (draftee)"

Charles Moskos has written a lot of good material on race in the US military. He co-wrote "All That We Can Be," which is a great little book on the subject. Basically he argues that the US Army destroyed Jim Crow, and is the single most effectively integrated society in the world.

The book I mentioned had a neat survey of both soldiers and univesity students from a notoriously liberal university. The soldiers of all races polled as being far more conservative on all issues, and also as having better relations between racial groups. So much for the 'conservatives are racist' arguement.
