Anti-terror police raid mosque

LONDON (Reuters) - Anti-terrorist police have raided a London mosque, home to one of the country's most outspoken Muslim clerics, and arrested an unspecified number of people there, Scotland Yard has said.

"A number of people who were residing at the mosque were arrested under the Terrorism Act 2000 and are being taken to a central London police station," Scotland Yard police said in a statement.

Officers raided the Finsbury Park mosque and two adjacent buildings in north London at 2 a.m. on Monday as part of a pre-planned intelligence operation, police said.

There were no further details of the arrests given and the operation was said to be still under way.

The mosque is the base of Abu Hamza al-Masri, leader of the group Supporters of Sharia (Islamic law).

Egyptian-born Masri has become Britain's most notorious Muslim cleric due to his praise for Saudi-born militant Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network, blamed for the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States, and his outspoken criticism of Western foreign policy.

Police did not say whether Masri was among those arrested.

The Charity Commission has threatened to evict Masri from the mosque claiming he has abused his position by preaching "inflammatory and highly political" speeches.

The mosque is a registered charity, which gives the Charity Commission the right to intervene in its affairs if it believes it is being used for political purposes.

The commission has given Masri until Monday night to answer its charge that he has brought the name and reputation of the mosque's governing charity into disrepute.

Masri said his lawyers had taken steps to ensure he could continue to preach at the mosque, where several Muslims previously arrested under terrorism legislation are known to have worshipped.

The government and police have said that, while they keep an eye on Masri's activities, they are powerless to curb him because of the mosque's charitable status.

Moderate Muslim groups dismiss Masri and others such as al-Muhajiroun's founder, Syrian-born Sheikh Omar Bakri Mohammad, as fringe voices and accuse the media of giving radical groups too much attention.

Britain has arrested about 200 terror suspects since the September 11 attacks, with most of those detained said to be north African and mainly Algerian. Many have been released without charge though the number held has surged since November.

The country's most senior policeman said on Sunday anti-terror police were watching a "large number of people" and said they intended to make further arrests.

We should, but we won't. Raiding mosques is just about the most politically incorrect thing imaginable. CAIR and the ACLU would put on the pressure, and we'd cave in.
