Kerry Rebuked in DuBuque over 'Hate' Comment

Democratic presidential hopeful John Kerry got a long-distance tongue lashing Friday from Dubuque, Iowa Chamber of Commerce President Steward Sandstrom, after seven-year-old quotes from Kerry surfaced on the Internet stating that he "hated" the Iowa city.

"For someone to detest a place in the heartland like this, he must not have been having a good day," Sandstrom told WLIE radio host Mike Seigel in New York. Kerry travels to DuBuque on Sunday for a fundraiser to help build his organization for the Iowa caucuses next year.

But after hearing Kerry's remarks, Sandstrom warned the Massachusetts Democrat that he could expect some tough sledding. "When my fellow DuBuquers start to hear about that," he told Seigel, "he's going to have to do a lot of backpedaling and give some explanations."

Sandstrom defended his city of 56,000 against Kerry's verbal assault, saying, "It's a place that you'll find America's values still intact right to the core. I would hope that (Kerry) is going to be talking about some of those American values as he tries to convince people that he ought to be the leader of the free world."

Then Sandstrom added, "But he's not started off on a very good foot."

Sandstrom suggested that the Dubuque of seven years ago wasn't the DuBuque he's proud to call home today. "What a turnaround we've seen in DuBuque since '96. We've got an enormous reclamation of the (Mississippi) River coming online right now. (Kerry) is going to be more impressed than he's ever been about this piece of the heartland."

Cybercolumnist Matt Drudge reported late Thursday that Kerry had complained to the Boston Globe in 1996, "I hate going to places like Austin and Dubuque to raise large sums of money. But I have to."

Weird article. Iowa City and Dubuque are not the same place, nor are they terribly similar.

Iowa City is actually a little liberal enclave dominated by the University of Iowa, and the associated campus liberal silliness. Dubuque is a blue-collar river town in a different part of the state.

I've never heard of someone from Dubuque being offended by someone putting down Iowa City before.

Oops. Just re-read the article and realized Kerry cvriticized "the" Iowa city, meaning Dubuque. Not Iowa City itself.

In the words of esteemed journalist Rosanne Rosanna Danna, "Oh. NEVER MIND."

Kerry is almost finished already, the only thing that keeps him credible is his wife's $600 million bank account.

To date, he is too hypocritical to spend Theresa's money. It's your money he wants to spend, not his own.

...too bad your "wrong turn" didn't take you 25 miles west of Dubuque...you would have been extremely impressed with Dyersville - home to Field of Dreams, the Ertle Toy factory, and the most gorgeous Catholic basilica you may ever see.

Yes, "Liberals" hate Christianity as much as they hate America, maybe more.

Maybe he'll like it better if he goes there to raise small sums of money.

Left the first time when I was three to accompany my folks to Asia. Dad was stationed there with the military in the 1950s-1960s. Back home to Iowa a couple of times in the mid 1950s, then home to the states for good in 1961. Colorado, then back to IA. High school in Centerville, class of 67. BA @ U of Iowa, 1972.
Lived 16 years in Minnesota. Mom is still in IA. We now live in the Missouri Ozarks.

If you are a Midwesterner, Dubuque is a great long weekend getaway town. Right in the area are caves, Field of Dreams movie site, the Catholic Bascilica in Dyersville is awesome, the dog track, the "elevator" up the hillside in downtown is pretty cool, riverboat rides, and good eatin'.

If you are into antiques and that sort of stuff, Galena, Illinois is just a hop away too. Can't say you probably would want to spend a week there on vacation, but it is great for a long weekend.

Another reason libs might hate Dubuque....and this may no longer be true after the 2000 census, but at one time, it was the most white metro area in the country. Something like 98% white. Come now, Dubuque, where is your diversity?
