Husband of missing Modesto woman lied about girlfriend, family says

MODESTO, Calif. (AP) - The husband of a missing pregnant woman may have lied about his relationship with a girlfriend and possibly other things, a spokeswoman for the family said Friday.

Kim Petersen, a spokeswoman for relatives of Laci Peterson, 27, of Modesto, said police have shown the family recent photographs of Scott Peterson with a girlfriend. The husband had previously denied such a relationship, the family said.

"Now, however, they believe he has lied to them about this, and possibly other things as well," Petersen said.

"Approximately two weeks ago, Ron Grantski, Laci's stepfather, asked Scott if he had a girlfriend. Scott told him no and Ron believed him," Petersen said.

"The family is asking him to tell everything he knows and to fully cooperate with the Modesto Police Department," Petersen said. "Their family is the most important thing to them and if Scott has nothing to hide, they ask him to prove that."

Laci Peterson was reported missing on Christmas Eve. She is due to deliver a baby boy on Feb. 10. Her husband told investigators he went fishing at the Berkeley Marina on Christmas Eve morning.

Police did not indicate to the family if investigators believed Scott Peterson was responsible for his wife's disappearance, according to Petersen.

"The family knows that the police are doing their job," Petersen said. "They don't want to do anything that can hurt their chances of finding Laci."

Petersen, executive director of the Carole Sund-Carrington Memorial Reward Foundation, which is sponsoring a reward for Laci Peterson's safe return, said the Modesto center closed Thursday.

Volunteers also canceled plans to open a one-day center in Los Angeles on Sunday.

"Although Laci has not been located yet, our search effort will not stop," said Brad Saltzman, general manager of the Red Lion Hotel in Modesto, who had been organizing the volunteer centers. "We will continue to search for Laci and her baby boy."

Police have repeatedly said Scott Peterson is not a suspect but has been less than cooperative.

I remember reading that a witness told the police he/she saw Scott's truck and boat on Dec 24.

Was this the lady who says she saw SP in the Berekeley Marina? I think the consensus was that police found her 'unreliable'.

No, this was just something I read in the last day or two. I remember reading about the Berekeley Marina witness quite a while ago. The witness I am talking about saw Scott driving on a road.

I think this may be in reference to the person who reported seeing Scott at a gas station in Manteca, which is north of Modesto.

That would be great if they had a reliable witness who saw him driving. If the witness could be exact on time and direction that would be helpful.

I don't get that from this guy; he may just not ever say anything; unless his family covers for him, he has nowhere else to go. He may just try to stick it out.

I'm thinking this guy led two lives.

What, he was going to the water slide?? It would be interesting to know if he has the receipt and if it has a time on it.

You might be right, maybe he wasn't driving at the time but at the gas station. I do remember something about a gas station. Sheesh, it's hard to keep all this info straight.

Was there another person with the witness and the witness commented to the other person, maybe a child, about the truck and boat, I 'm trying to remember?

With Scott, who knows? But Manteca is on one of the routes he could have taken to the Bay Area from Modesto on Dec 24th.

I'm STILL not clear that if she was murdered, is that considered "accidental death"?

Unfortunately I don't know the answer to your question, but I am sure someone else here will come up with it.

I am not active in the business now, but I did have a lot of couples purchase individual policies in the 250,000 to 1,000,000 range. Some of my applicants, especially wives, could not qualify for the larger amounts because their income was not sufficient to justify a policy of that size. I almost always sold my clients term insurance in the 10 to 30 year range with the idea that young couples have the need to create an "immediate estate" to provide for their children should something happen to one or both parents before the family has had time to create sufficient wealth.

SP's wife would have known about the policy as she had to take a physical and sign the application even though SP may have owned the policy and been the beneficiary.

Personally, I would wonder if he purchased or had a similar (most likely larger) policy on himself. If he did not, I would find that very suspicious in this case.

I know this guy led two lives. No one really knew any thing about him including wife, girlfriend, and parents. Portrait of a psycopath.People are always stating that their victims must have been in denial but that is really not the point. This type of person mirrors back whatever he intuits the other person wants to see. He is the actor and director in any relationship and truly skilled in his own pathological script.

I think I remember that it was a woman and her daughter that said they saw him. I'll try to find it.

He bought a $25,000 policy on himself at the same time he took out the policy on Laci.

muggs, I seem to remember another person seeing Scott and the truck and boat at the gas station but I can't swear to it. Wish I could remember where I read it.
