Husband of missing Modesto woman lied about girlfriend, family says

MODESTO, Calif. (AP) - The husband of a missing pregnant woman may have lied about his relationship with a girlfriend and possibly other things, a spokeswoman for the family said Friday.

Kim Petersen, a spokeswoman for relatives of Laci Peterson, 27, of Modesto, said police have shown the family recent photographs of Scott Peterson with a girlfriend. The husband had previously denied such a relationship, the family said.

"Now, however, they believe he has lied to them about this, and possibly other things as well," Petersen said.

"Approximately two weeks ago, Ron Grantski, Laci's stepfather, asked Scott if he had a girlfriend. Scott told him no and Ron believed him," Petersen said.

"The family is asking him to tell everything he knows and to fully cooperate with the Modesto Police Department," Petersen said. "Their family is the most important thing to them and if Scott has nothing to hide, they ask him to prove that."

Laci Peterson was reported missing on Christmas Eve. She is due to deliver a baby boy on Feb. 10. Her husband told investigators he went fishing at the Berkeley Marina on Christmas Eve morning.

Police did not indicate to the family if investigators believed Scott Peterson was responsible for his wife's disappearance, according to Petersen.

"The family knows that the police are doing their job," Petersen said. "They don't want to do anything that can hurt their chances of finding Laci."

Petersen, executive director of the Carole Sund-Carrington Memorial Reward Foundation, which is sponsoring a reward for Laci Peterson's safe return, said the Modesto center closed Thursday.

Volunteers also canceled plans to open a one-day center in Los Angeles on Sunday.

"Although Laci has not been located yet, our search effort will not stop," said Brad Saltzman, general manager of the Red Lion Hotel in Modesto, who had been organizing the volunteer centers. "We will continue to search for Laci and her baby boy."

Police have repeatedly said Scott Peterson is not a suspect but has been less than cooperative.

Please see post #100! This is the first I've heard that SP actually knew the missing SLO student.

I heard that;

And that's the first time I've heard the curtains being discussed. He said the family member said, "If she had made it through the night, those curtains would have been open."

Chemnitz, THANK you for taking the time to post #54 your input and experience concerning the life insurance information. It really flys in the face of what Scottie took out on his wife, it seems.

I am thinking out loud here, but if there was a double indemnity clause that ONLY paid twice in case of accidental death, then we should be looking for a body that looks like it accidentally fell over a cliff, or something? Well...the dog did have a leash on it. Maybe she's closer to home than we think?

Or maybe Scott wanted just to go for the $250,000...who knows.

When they said there were no curtains on Larry King, they tried to describe "something else" that covered the windows. Those "slat blinds" maybe?

This is getting scarey about SP knowing the murdered student. Ouch!

I just heard that, too! They also noted about the drapes being closed, when Laci's family said that she always opened them in the morning and they weren't on the 24th.

Is this the same SP?? Two Scott Petersons at the same school, at the same time? Maybe it's a common name.

Legal counsel for Paul Flores and his family, on MORE than one occasion, have offered to plea bargain., i.e., lead investigators to Kristin's body in exchange for a reduced charge.

Kristin's parent's agreed the first two times, but Paul's counsel failed to respond."

Ruben Flores laughed in Mrs. Smart's face. He told a associate of his that Kristin "deserved to die."

Susan Flores, a teachers aide for troubled teens, blamed Kristin's own father for her death and was even arrested for assaulting Dennis Mahon, a friend of the Smarts.

This website received a letter from Mission Hills Mortgage saying they fired Mike McConville (Susan's boyfriend) for dragging their good name into this horrible case.

Paul Flores, the prime supect, was recently let out of jail after serving time for violating his parole after a 3rd DUI arrest.

Re: 108, that's not the same SP. And it's a pretty common name. I found 72 of them on switchboard the other day for California, who knows how many more are unlisted. There were 2 I think in Modesto, at least 3 in SLO. All over the state, in fact.

Let me know what you think...don't you think that this connection between Kristin Smart and SP has been brought out by Police, not bc they. think SP had anything to do with it, but more to put heat on SP so that he might admit to the murder of his wife. "yes ok I murdered my wife but i had nothing to do with kristin"

Thanks for the info. Now, if I may play devil's advocate for a moment;-)

Why would Flores offer to plea bargain if the DA's office never had any evidence to charge him in the first place? That's like asking to go to jail. This Ruben and Susan Flores, were they in on it? Are they Paul's parents and he confessed to them? This doesn't make sense.

Kristin Smart was 6 feet tall. Seems she could have put up a pretty good fight. How tall is Flores?

These guys and their disfunctional families are a real "pieces of work".

I once saw an interview with Jeffrey Dahmer's parents. They seemed like normal folks. Eerie.

Looks like the other guy, Flores, was negotiating pleas on the case. If those reports are accurate, this speculation involving SP in the case is another anchor in the bay.

Actually, I do think that's part of it. But it's pretty strange that he was on the list of a few hundred people who actually knew her. Don't you think?

I mean, he knew someone who disappeared a few years ago, and now his wife and baby are also missing. What are the odds?
