It was Clinton and Reno and Richardson who did it. So, I'd agree.
They showed what they would do with Billy Dale. It has always seemed to me they needed a scapegoat to deflect attention from their serious help to China for campaign cash.
Dredging up the Lee case today again deflects attention from the very real violations done in the aerospace arena.
If there is spying going on, there is usually a single handler in the picture somewhere who recruits the source - or sources- and you have to wonder if by naming Lee as guilty right away, if it allowed the real handler time to get out of Dodge. If you don't know who the real spy is, you should look for each suspect's handler.
The rotten thing about the Clinton administration is that you never know if they are honestly trying to nail a spy or are trying to reveal a double agent for the benefit of our enemies, who just happened to be pumping a lot of money into the Clinton/Gore election campaign. The administration listed bin Laden as their boogie amn and they were right about that, for example... he has been a legitimate threat all along. They just used him as a means to look busy, just as they used Aidid in Somalia ...when they really weren't trying hard to get either one and even undercut the missions- either from extreme timidity or deliberately, for malicious reasons. (The Clintons certainly weren't timid with anything else they did.) So they do occasionally have the right men in the scopes. But they have an unerring knack for letting them go, or owrse, even pardoning ones that have been caught. And they ran an op on Imad Mugniyah, but let him go, too. Only in his case, they didn't bother to use him as the boogie man and Clinton never came out in public and said he wanted his head.
That's what I despised most about the Clinton administration- the Clintons themselves- and Al Gore in particular- weren't working for us but apparently for our enemies... Armand Hammer was a backer and he backs communists, not patriots. But an administration is much more than the people at the top, it is composed of a lot of other people who genuinely are faithful to the country- and there are government employees there who really are doing their jobs mixed in with all of the bad appointees, and Clinton and friends had to juggle all those people around and couldn't hamstring every single operation. They had to use some good people, and do some of the work right, if only as a sort of cover to keep everyone in doubt. At least you would hope so.
During the time my brother was in Somalia , every single operation against Aidid was cut off at the last minute not because it was in danger of failure or could be in error, but because they were ordered to pull back at the very last minute possible. The people who were going to take Aidid out were all honorable people- it was only the White House who hamstrung them.
So I have a theory. Maybe Wen Ho Lee was indeed a spy- but maybe he was spying for Taiwan, much as Pollard was spying for Israel. And going after him was Clinton's way of "doing his job" while simulataneously doing an even bigger favor to China. Let's be honest- while it is certainly in our interest not to let these secrets out even to allies- Taiwan would be foolish if it didn't try to get nuclear capability- the one thing which could deter China from invading the island more effectively than little Taiwan having to depend on the US to save the day. Taiwan is bound to be using every means posible to get the technology- God knows I would if I were them- and China more than anything wants to prevent it. That's got to be worth a lot of campaign cash. Can you picture some Clinton hack telling their little Chinese general friend: "Hey, I just happen to know of a Taiwanese national who appears to be lifting nuke tech for someone- wonder who? What do you want us to do with him and how much is it worth?" I can.
