I suspect Scott is facing both extortion and is getting bribed. Somebody is telling him, "We know about your extracurricular activities. Take our money, preach our party line convincingly, and nobody you love will have an 'accident'. What'll it be, Scotty-boy?"

The reason that I think Scott is being extorted too is that he is way too impassioned. He sounds like too much of a believer to merely be paid to mouth some words that some raghead told him to. He's impassioned and very motivated. Somebody has evidence of him being into something or they've threatened his family.

You're probably right. It's no doubt not an either-or situation. There's pressure on him, and he's getting a kickback too, I'd wager.

There's also talk that his wife is either Chechan or from some other province of Russia. There are probably a few ways to get to Scotty.
